Napoleonic British Royal Navy Cutlass Woolley,
Deakin & Dutton, for sale
In good overall condition, a scarce Napoleonic British Royal Navy
Cutlass by Woolley, Deakin & Dutton of Birmingham.
Originally a figure eight guard cutlass whose hilt / guard has
been period modified allowing it to be stowed in numbers in a sea
chest. Normally cutlasses that had been "demoted" through
some damage or having been superceded by a new model were so modified
to fit with many others in sea chests on the ship's gun decks. This
cutlass has several ominous to the cutting edge and a GR (George
III) crown to the blade rather than a view / inspection mark (broad
arrow). Even more ominous than the nicks to the cutting edge of
the blade perhaps is a single nick to the guard. Note: the blade
has some remaining protective varnish over the maker's name; it
is not any kind of defect or damage.
The 26 1/2 inch blade is in good condition with several old if
not period nicks (base metal hidden by patina, no burrs to the edges)
and firm in the hilt and grip. The hilt / guard with age, but good.
The tubular iron / steel grip (pre 1804 type) is good.
A great and evocative example by a well known and respected maker.
Can't beat £1000. Please quote item reference number AF47.
