Marked “W. L. & H Sargant” with Crown over 4 view mark to the obverse, the Saragnt brothers used this trading style only during 1838 to 1839, right at the start of Queen Victoria’s reign. These lions head dirks are normally associated with ships of the East India Company but the crown mark shows this fighting dirk was issued to a junior Royal Navy officer Not a dress dirk, but clearly a fighting dirk for close quarters on a cramped sailing ship.

The 17 3/4 inch blade has been overly cleaned in the past but is in good condition and firm in the grip, though the propeller shaped cross guard is a little loose. The marine ivory / bone grip is in good order but with fine age cracks and wear, plus some small chips. The backpiece is bowed out a little. The leather and brass scabbard has aged and endured some repairs but is sound. The dirk sheathes and draws well.
A very good example of a scarce RN dirk. Well priced at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number AF42. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 1104-60x30x15 (1.423).
