Gendaito Japanese Shin Gunto, Murayama Kaneyuki,
sold |
In good condition with high original polish, a Gendaito Japanese
Shin Gunto, Murayama Kaneyuki.

The mei / signature on this is most unusual / rare, it reads "Noshu
Kaneyuki motte magane iri saku", or made by Kaneyuki with iron
inside. Records show Murayama Kaneyuki as being active during WW2
but most active after the war, so this would appear to be one of
his earliest works. The inscription and irregular sambon-sugi ha
hamon with a few loose clouds and distinct white border shows this
blade to be gendaito. A scan of the relevant page on Kaneyuki from
a respected reference book (Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868 - 1945)
is available with extra photos.

The 25 1/4 inch nagasa (cutting edge section) blade is in very
good condition with original still high polish. There is a little
movement with the tsuba (guard) and tsuka (handle) which appears
related to same (rayskin) shrinkage; an additional sepa (blade washer)
would probably resolve it. Otherwise the tsuka components all good
/ as they should be. The saya was once covered in leather for combat
or is a later replacement; it is hard to tell, but in good condition.
The sword sheathes and draws well.
This is a beautiful sword and worth every penny of £? (too
late, now sold). Please quote item reference number AF37 (1095).
Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
