Victorian British Royal Navy Officer's Wilkinson
Sword, 1865, for sale
In good condition, a mid Victorian British Royal Navy Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, sold in 1865 to R G Freeland Esq.
Most likey a family pruchase for their newly commissioned son,
tehre are no records of a R G Freeland at that time in the Royal
Navy. There are several Freelands, most likely William F E Freeland
who saw service in the Royal Navy's West Africa squadron in charge,
for a time, of an exporation paddle steamer used along the Zambesi
/ Congo / Niger Rivers.
The 31 1/4 inch blade is in good condition and has been replated
at some stage (the whole sword has been professionally refurbished),
so the etching is feint, but there. Blade firm in the hilt / guard.
The hilt with gilt remaining is in good condition. The fishskin
grip has been re-whittened and is in very good condition, as are
the twisted grip wire bindings. The black leather and gilt metal
fittings scabbard is good, some wear. The sword sheathes and draws
well. The folding guard section works well and locates / secures
