1796P Waterloo era British Cavalry Officer's
Sabre / Sword, For Sale |
In aged and battle damaged condition, a 1796 pattern Waterloo
era British Cavalry Officer's Sabre / Sword.

A true undress (campaign / field service) sword with its leather
grip, despite the fact it once had glorious blue and gilt etching
often associated with dress swords. This one has a couple of chunks
/ nicks to the cutting edge and also back edge very near the point;
it appears this sabre once took part in active service!

The 32 1/4 inch blade has said damage but is otherwise good and
firm in the grip, remnants of blue and gilt etching remain at the
forte. The stirrup hilt / guard is a little loose and aged but sound
though one langet is missing. The leather covered grooved grip has
worn holes and age / wear but is sound. The scabbard has suffered
rust, now inert, but is sound. The sword sheathes and draws loosely,
no doubt the original interior wooden lining slats have gone.
A sword that has been through the wars for sure, but an evocative
piece and sound. Something to hold and wonder / visualize over.
