Bombay / Royal Engineers Officers Sabre by
Wilkinson Sword, Sold |
In good condition, a rare Bombay / Royal Engineers Officers Sabre
by Wilkinson Sword, Cowper family coat of arms.

Serial number 12195, sold by Wilkinson Sword on the 17th November,
1862 to H Cowper, Esquire. Bearing the Cowper family coat of arms
(A Lion's Gamb Erect And Erased Or, Holding A Cherrybranch Vert,
Fructed Gu). We believe this sword was bought by a relative for
one Alexander Cowper, who was a Bombay / Royal Engineer; the only
H Cowpers we can find while also connected with the British Military
in Bombay were infantry and corps officers.

The 34 1/8 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the
hilt. The engineer's pattern hilt / guard in good condition with
a steady pleasing patina. The fishskin grip with some wear but good.
The twisted grip wire bindings also good. The black leather and
steel fittings scabbard os good for age but has a kink and the stitching
is coming astray. The sabre sheathes and draws well.
A very good and unusual sword with plenty of research potential.
A must for any collector at £? (too late, now sold). Please
quote item reference U06 (0809). Further / full sized photos available
upon request.
