WW1 Russian Mounted Artillery / Cavalry Trooper's
Sword, For Sale
In overall very good condition, a WW1 M1881 Russian Mounted Artillery
/ Dragoon Cavalry Trooper's Shaska / Sabre complete with original
Blade dated 1916, the hilt dated 1915; you often see this as they
were made and inspected separately before being joined, though it
may be that the original blade was damaged. This shaska has its
sword knot still attached, so it is either from a fallen / captured
trooper or one of the weapons discarded by retreating Russian troops.
In any event, the knot makes it a cut above the rest and yes, of
course, we guarantee it is 100% authentic (these swords have been
reproduced many times).
The 31 3/4 inch period sharpened blade is overall very good but
has some slight nicks to the cutting edge, and is firm in the hilt.
The hilt is aged but good, the wooden grip is in good order, a little
worn. No scabbard which lends itself to a harsh ending for the trooper
that once carried / held this weapon; the Russians were still very
much into traditional cavalry warfare in WW1.
A really evocative piece; if only it could talk of its history.
