1801 Guernsey Militia Officers Blue &
Gilt Etched Sword, Sold |
In good condition, a rare 1801 Guernsey Militia Officers Blue
& Gilt Etched Sword.

Made in the French Revolutionary Era (Subaltern officer) style
by Salter late Joseph Greensill 135 Strand London, which dates the
sword to 1801. The blue and gilt etching (what is left of it) is
in the French style except for a single Union Jack flag.

The 27 1/3 inch blade is overall good but with rust patches both
sides towards the point (still structurally sound), some bluing
remaining one side, some gilt both sides. Blade firm in hilt. The
brass hilt good but has lost its gilt. The hardwood grip, again
in the French style, is good but with some small chips. The leather
and brass fittings scabbard is good for its age, the leather with
some cracking and a kink making the scabbard weaker at that point.
The sword sheathes and draws well.
A really rare and unusual sword for only £(too late, now
sold) . Please quote item reference S51 (0662). Further / full sized
pictures available upon request.
