Mid 19C British Royal Navy Ship of the Line
Gunner's Dirk, Sold |
In sound condition, a scarce mid 19C British Royal Navy Ship of
the Line Gunner's Dirk.

Marked "B4" to the langet, this large lion's head dirk
could only have been issued to a gunner on a RN ship of the line;
"B Deck, Weapon 4". Gunners being senior to Midshipmen,
the normal wearers of dirks (many midshipmen became gunners to progress
their careers); Gunners being senior to the gun crew "Gunner's
mates".

The 17 1/2 inch blade is in overall good condition, some black
rust patches, a steady patina, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt
having suffered from harsh service conditions (a few bends and bumps)
but is sound. The grip is an old replacement. The original leather
and brass fittings scabbard is actually good for its age to say
the least. The dirk sheathes and draws well, but does not sheath
fully due to leather shrinkage.
A scarce item at a good low price, just £? (too late, now
sold) . Please quote item reference S50 (0661). Further / full sized
