Claymore bladed RN officer are rare, and command a price premium. This dress weight sword is marked to F Highatt Gosport on both the blade's ricasso and the top locket of the scabbard; Frederick Highatt was an outfitter and sword cutler who traded from 1855 to 1905.

The 28 5/8 inch blade was obviously for a short officer. The blade is in good condition for its age but with wear and rust patches. Blade firm in hilt. The hilt / guard good; the folding guard section is good but does not fully go into the down position (there is a lug that goes into a hole in the hilt which is blocked a little). Grip / twisted grip wires are good. The original sword knot is not surprisingly a little grubby and worn (one strap "broken" or rather the clip is missing). The scabbard is good but has a weak area near the chape (a split one side and weak the other; later glued repair / strengthening). The sword sheathes and draws well.

Truly, a really good example for only £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference M70 (1262). Further / full sized images available upon request.
