Early to Mid 19C Scandinavian Artillery Gunner's
Briquet / Sword, sold
In very good condition for its age, a 19C Scandinavian artillery
gunner's sidearm / hanger and scabbard, probably Swedish or possibly
Finnish or Danish.
A very interesting briquet as the flat blade more than implies
French manufacture, though the frog button is more Germanic / Northern
European. The flat blade also implies the briquet dates from the
early, rather than mid 19th Century. France was an ally to Russia
at the time of the Finnish War between Sweden and Russia, which
the Swedes lost badly, and as this briquet looks every part the
French An XI (rather than later briquets which had fortes and /
or fullers to the blade), some research is required. Marked simply
"1 C5." over "654." to the blade, nowhere else.
In any event, this is a worthy research piece and collector's item,
as the scabbard and frog are all intact. 25 1/2 inch blade is in
good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt in good condition
also. The leather and brass fittings scabbard are good. The sword
sheathes and draws very well.
A great sword for only £250. Please quote item reference number
H22 (1070). Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
