Mid Victorian British Customs Cutter / River Police Officer's Dirk, sold

An exceptionally rare Victorian British Customs or River Police officer's dirk.

Sales enquiries

In very good general order, an exceptionally rare Mid Victorian dirk for a Customs or River Police officer. Marked on the blade to maker Woods & Son of Bow Street (of course) London, the grip very characteristically that of a law enforcement officer, the fact it is a dirk shows they were marine or maritime based. The 11 inch blade is in worn though good condition, still sharp (period sharpened) and firm in the hilt. The hilt, grip and grip wire bindings are in very good order. The leather and gilt metal sheath / scabbard is good for its age, though the leather has shrunk a little and consequently the blade no longer fully sheathes.

Again, a very rare item and you are highly unlikely to ever find another. Therefore, a great price. Please quote item reference number G85 (976). Further / full sized images upon request.
