Circa 1850 British Constabulary / Police
Officer's Sword / Sabre, sold
A mid-19th Century British policeman's sword in overall good condition.
Quite a scarce item, a so called 1850 Pattern British police officer's
sword, though the date is in reality only an estimate. This sword
has been well used and shows the signs of a long service life and
age. The locking pin mechanism on the hilt is still there, but the
large thumb button has gone, and the corresponding section of the
top fitting of the scabbard, where the locking mechanism would have
located, is gone. In addition, the fishskin has shrunk, as is normal
/ common, over the grip's wooden base.
The hilt's quillon just beyond the "09" rack number stamp
has been officially shortened some time; it has been regilted. The
leather scabbard has a weak (floppy) section, but the sword and
especially the blade itself are good. The 23 1/2 inch blade is double
edged towards the final 1/3 of its length towards the point, and
was period sharpened. Blade firm in the hilt. Hilt overall good.
Scabbard complete if minor damage / age. The sword sheaths and draws
well. Further / full sized images are available upon request. Please
