A really, very rare sword. This is a British capture / bring back from the Napoleonic Peninsular War; captured from a Spanish officer when the Spanish were supporting / fighting alongside the Napoleonic Imperial French Army against Portugal and Britain. The blade is dated to 1796. The hilt / guard is pre-1815, distinguishable by the little roman style crown. The scabbard is a later British life guards scabbard which has been made especially for the sword / blade. So the sword was therefore captured by a member of the British 2nd Life Guards from an injured / dead / captured enemy Spanish officer, while the Life Guardsman was serving on the Iberian Peninsular.

The 29 7/8 inch blade is in very good condition and quite firm in the hilt (a tiny amount of movement). The hilt / guard aged but good. The original leather grip and twisted grip wire in very good order. The heavy steel scabbard aged and with a kink is good. The sword sheathes and draws well if a little loosely.
