WW2 Gendaito Japanese Army Officer's Shin Gunto, Family Mon, Sword Knot

Sales enquiries

Unsigned, clearly a traditionally made "Gendaito" blade. This gunto has a family mon and sword knot attached, so it was taken off a Japanese army officer, it s not a surrender sword (officers removed their sword knots and family mon before surrendering their swords at the end of WW2).

Long, heavy, impressive 28 inch Nagasa (cutting edge section) blade in good overall condition, some small rust patches and scuffs, not many. The blade is still exceptionally sharp. A little loose in the tsuka (grip) because the star burst silver habaki is not as tight as it once was. Nice private purchase tsuba with full set of seppa. Rayskin / same in good order, as are the bindings (ito). Leather covered saya aged but good. The sword sheathes and draws well, and the locking pin mechanism is all good.

What a sword! Well worth spending the money to have a full polish. Yours for £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number AB70 (0136). Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
