Klingenthal Napoleonic French Heavy Cavalry
Trooper's Sword, Sold |
In good condition, a 100% guaranteed authentic Klingenthal made
Napoleonic French Heavy Cavalry Cuirassier Trooper's Sword.
Probably the most impressive sword of all time. The An XIII Cuirassier
sword has been reproduced many times, but this one is 100% authentic,
guaranteed. Most likely a war trophy following the 100 Days War
which culminated in the Battle of Waterloo, this one is not likely
a battlefield pick up but a post battle seizure as the serial numbers
on the hilt and scabbard match. But it is a war trophy as it did
not stay in French service, else the grip at the very least would
have been changed (post 1815 grips have more grip turns) and / or
rehilted (in 1816, the French introduced a new "lipped"
hilt). The poinçons
on the forte are correct for the November 1812 date inscription
on the blade, but the blade almost certainly had an earlier hilt
which was damaged and replaced, as the hilt's poinçons and
single serial number matching a Mk3 / 1816M (when
it was made official) scabbard indicate a later hilt.
The 37 inch blade is in very good condition, having been protected
by the scabbard over the years, and is firm in the hilt. The hilt
/ guard with age and wear, possibly period. The leather grip is
original but the twisted grip wire is mostly gone. The steel scabbard
clearly was once period chemically browned (as is normal), but has
aged and been cleaned so much / most of this is gone, but the scabbard
is still in very good shape. The sword sheathes and draws well.
This iconic sword is becoming increasingly hard to source as they
go into the hands of collectors who quite rightly guard them jealously.
So don't wait for another come along; it may not happen. Below market
