Victorian Pre-1880 British Royal Naval Junior
Officer's Sword, Sold
In good condition, scarce Pre-1880 British Royal Naval Junior
There is no locking pin to the scabbard / locating hole to the
folding section of the guard, so this sword pre-dates 1880. The
black, rather than white fishskin grip shows the sword was for a
junior officer, a lieutenant.
The 30 1/4 inch plain blade has patina throughout, is in good condition
and firm in the hilt; the blade has been professionally period sharpened,
most likely by the maker. Hilt in good order with a lot of age /
tarnish; the hilt appears to have been browned (for camouflage sakes)
by the maker. The black fishskin grip is good but with some patches
of wear even loss. The grip wire bindings are in good order for
their age. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is in aged condition,
but is sound overall. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
Junior officer swords are much rarer than standard white fishskin
grip officer swords (many junior officers of course wearing dirks).
