Sales enquiries

This is such a rare sword because, although it has the common late 19C "gothic" hilt, it is fitted with the end of century "dumb bell" blade (so called as they reckoned a cross section of the blade would look like a dumb bell). This 1892P was not mandatory, so officers with the 1854 pattern, which had the same hilt but the earlier fuller blade, indeed saw no reason to change. Then, newly commissioned officers who bought the 1892P were required, in 1895, to change to the new mandatory 1895P steel hilted sword; they would then typically just have the blade re-hilted with the new 1895P hilt / guard. So not many of these 1892P's were made, and the vast majority that were, subsequently had conversions to become 1895P's. So this, a genuine original 1892P is a very rare sword indeed.

The 32½ inch blade is in very good condition, etched to “Robt Mole & Sons, Birmingham, Makers to the War & India Offices”, with flat topped crown, British Royal Coat of Arms and wreath on one side, and crowned elaborate VR cypher and wreath on the other, all in stylized foliate panels, regulation triple bar gilt hilt with side loop and incorporating crowned VR cypher, plain pommel and chequered backstrap, wire bound fishskin grip, very good condition, retaining virtually all original polish and gilding, in its plated scabbard with 2 rings (some rust and bubbling overall) with chamois lined leatherette bag (worn and aged, the scabbard catches on the inside of the bag). The scabbard could be easily and cost-effectively refurbished (stripped down and electro-plated) to produce an exceptional example.
