WW2 Wilkinson Sword Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting
Knife 1st Pattern (sold).
A rare first pattern F-S Fighting Knife by Wilkinson Sword, almost
certainly carried by a US commando.
No stores number stamped to the hilt / grip, so a weapon actually
carried by an officer or more likely a US commando. The cross guard
is bent out of shape a little one side; I could easily bang it back
into shape but I understand the damage came from a rough and tumble
adventure with the original user. I have nothing to verify this,
as I was told by mouth, but I do not think the person would have
cause to fabricate the story as they too knew they could very easily
mallet it back into shape. I have left it as it is, as I like battle
scared items. The sheath is comes apart into its two composite sections.
The 14.4cm blade has been period sharpened and is firm in the hilt,
a little movement of the crossguard as you would expect. The blade
length (just under 6 inches) indicates it was carried / used by
a US commando, as they had a preference for 6 inch blades (their
own Applegate-Fairbairn fighting knife for US commandos having a
6 inch blade). An evocative investmen. Full sized photos available
upon request. Item reference number = A80 (445).
